Acute Intestinal Failure ::Status: ESPEN Special Interest Group

Current ongoing activity 2021:

A worldwide survey to assess the management of patients with mesenteric ischaemia & infarction: https://www.tfaforms.com/4865416

Patients with mesenteric ischaemia often have a significant delay until a diagnosis is made and some then present with a mesenteric infarction. There may be differences in the availability of appropriate investigations and treatments as well as differences in teaching and awareness in different settings. We wish to assess the importance of some of these factors prior to conducting a more formal observational study.

We are conducting a survey to assess the different approaches to the management of patients with mesenteric ischaemia and intestinal infarction and kindly invite clinicians to participate.

SIG (Acute Intestianal Failure).
Started:
August 2010 (at 33rd ESPEN Congress in Nice)

Field of interest: Nutritional and metabolic disorders in acute intestinal failure (AIF) and the compromised gut (CG)

Aims: To perform scientific and epidemiological studies in the field of AIF and the condtions that lead to AIF.

To provide guidelines for both of these topics.

To participate in the education of professionals with an interest in AIF and CG.

Composition of the group: The ESPEN-AIF Special Interest Group has a maximum of 12 members.

The group is multidisciplinary and members are recruited from physicians, pharmacists, nurses and dieticians. Membership of the group is normally limited to 4 years, but can be extended to assure continuity if the member vigorously participates in the SIG AIF’s activities.

Presentation of the work of AIF Group: The coordinator of the study, paper or guidelines is normally the first author of the publication. The rest of authors are included in the authors list based on the contribution to the study.

Others, who contributed to the study, are mentioned in the "acknowledgements" section.

Papers are submitted to the ESPEN meetings and manuscripts to one of the ESPEN journals or other relevant journals.

Meetings of the AIF group: The group convenes for at least two meetings every year. The Winter meeting is held during a week-end in January in a city selected by members.

The second meeting takes place during the ESPEN meeting in August or September.

An open meeting is organized during the ESPEN congress in order to give delegates the opportunity to learn about the activities of the group and recruit new members The information on the web site is adjusted at half-year intervals or when appropriate.

Members must fulfill the following criteria:

Members of ESPEN.

Enthusiasm for and affinity with the work of the group.

Expertise in the field of AIF and/or CG.

Members must be approved by their national society for clinical nutrition

A list of the members of the AIF SIG will be submitted to ESPEN Executive committee each year

Financial support:

ESPEN provides financial support. The budget has to be accepted by the ESPEN Executive committee. All expenses must be clearly defined (meetings, secretariat, mailing etc.).

Members of AIF group are encouraged to generate financial support from pharmaceutical companies or other sources. The ESPEN treasurer will control any money raised.

Home Parenteral Nutrition Book - 2nd edition

Containing contributions from leading international experts and under the auspices of the ESPEN HAN Group, this book explores the life-saving treatment of home parenteral nutrition. It covers the complete scenario of home parenteral nutrition (HPN), from its prevalence in different continents to clinical indications and the practical aspects of its management. Topics covered inlcude the growing use of HPN, scientific and practical issues associated with HPN in adults and the pediatric population, indications and outcomes in various diseases, complications, nutrient requirements, preparation and administration of the admixtures, monitoring of patients, medical and surgical alternatives, ethics and legislation, and quality of life. ESPEN LLL-course on Home Parenteral Nutrition in Adults

The group actively contributes to the ESPEN LLL program by delivering the course on HPN in adults.

Acknowledgments

The group has been awarded with the “ESPEN RESEARCH NETWORK GRANT” 2009 for the project: “An international study of the quality of life of adult patients treated with home parenteral nutrition (HPN)”, presented by Janet Baxter.
